General

Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Titles according to user language (localization)

IMDB shows the title of a film in my language (as guessed from my browser settings, I guess). Even if you keep the user interface in English, you should offer (at least in searches) my interface language (with fallbacks for same-language different-country titles), English and the original film language.

Thanks for the feedback! We do have a very international user base, so this makes sense.

  2. Filter by Length / Duration

Add a Length / Duration filter. Sometimes you have just a short amount of time and want to see something that fits that window. Other times, you are in the mood to see a 3 hour behemoth . Since the informations is already there, it shouldn't be diffcult to implement.

Thanks for the idea – yes, we do have the information to add that filter, good to know that there’s a use case!

  3. Link to films available on Netflix

It would be useful to be able to filter films by only those available on Netflix

Right now have to do a search for any film that has a high rating from movielens

  4. Export results option

I´ve like the option to export all my recomendations, my wishlist, my ratings or every list I can generate. So later I can analyze this in other software.
If this, I discovered that watched more Spielberg than I've liked... or cross later with my imdb list and verify what is diferent, what is missing.
Some data is never enough :)

  5. Occasionally "force" me to rate movies I've already rated.

I end up rating movies that I've recently seen much higher than similarly good movies from years ago. Giving me (users) an occasional movie to rate that I've already rated without my showing my previous rating might keep algorithms freshly accurate, or at least would provide additional data points. Complex? Yes, but perhaps quite valuable.

  6. Show movies by similarity

I'd like a way to view the list of movies organised by similarity, e.g. setting, script writer, adapted from same source / remakes.

I’m interested in hearing ideas from movielens users on how we might operationalize these features.

  7. Allow arbitrary precision for predictions in stars widget

Currently, the predicted stars widgets display predicted ratings with 0.5 star precision. E.g., if the predicted rating is 3.82, it will make 3 and a half of the stars blue. It would be more useful to make three full stars and 82% of a fourth star blue.

  9. Justify the Personal Ratings

Tell us why MovieLens rated a particularly movie so high or low. Cite ratings on a couple of similar movies, and list the top 3-5 tags that contributed.

It’s a cool idea, and worth further consideration. However, it is currently unlikely to happen given MovieLens’s utility as a research platform for our graduate students.

  12. Stop recommending very old movies when I clearly do not watch/rate them.

Every time I try to come back and use the site I'm always driven away by the need to hide pages and pages of old movie recommendations.

  13. Discussion Forum

Will there be a forum for discussion? Preferably not the same format as the movielens q&a, maybe just a comments section at the bottom of each movie.

Nothing planned yet, but we are certainly open to this idea!

For context, we had a discussion forum in the mid-2000s that was pretty successful. We see the shift to the Q&A interface (maybe 2009?) as a failure, since that really dropped discussion activity.

  14. Separate playlists?

I have different expectations for an action movie than I do for a drama. Sometimes I am in the mood for something different than I am normally looking for.

Is it possible to create separate playlists? I want at least three playlists, one for movies that will make me think, one for movies that will make me feel, and one for mindless fun.

I think that Pandora handles this well. I generally like singer/songwriter mellow stuff (Sarah McLachlan, Dar Williams, The Hush Sound, Leonard Cohen), but I also like a little bit of metal (Sabaton, Nightwish). Putting them on a…

Great idea. We’ve been pondering “mood-based recommendations” for a while.

  15. Use IMDb plot keywords instead of tags (was: Tags)

Curently the tag system is very chaotic and if you don't change it will become worse (see listal.com -> "women i would not even look at" tags)

Why not using the official IMDB plot keywords as tags?

Users should be only able to select the pre-defined ones.

E.g. "bad" is just disturbing. Or "hot" or "boobs"...

    See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429493/keywords?ref_=tt_stry_kw for example.

    And http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Keywords/

Also all tags should be written lowercase.

Thanks for the feedback. It is extremely unlikely that we will replace our tagging feature with IMDb plot keywords, but there are some other interesting ideas in here.

  16. Improving Buddies - Opt-In Match-Making Service?

Your softwares predicts how someone will like certain movies by examining how others with similar tastes enjoy those movies. Why not offer a means of allowing interested users with similar tastes to get to know each other?

[Maybe that's what forums are for? I am not someone who uses forums yet.]

  17. Filter by outside ratings

Everytime I see a recommendation of a movie I don't know, I check rotten tomstoes for its rating and, most of the time, I only watch it if it has a high enough rating. So, I would love to see some kind of filter that allowed me to filter my recommendations by movies with a rotten tomatoes or imdb rating above a certain threshold.

  18. The Star colors have changed!

In the old movie lens, predictions were in red and what you've rated is in blue but that has switched, I find it a little confusing. It will probably be ok down the line when the new site is launched and only seeing the new way, but just wondering if there was a specific reason this was done

Interesting! Hadn’t thought users would care. Let’s see if this issue gets more support.

The two reasons for the current choice:

    1. part of our new site’s color palette
    2. we wanted the “rated” color to be more vibrant than the “predicted” color (unlike the current site).

  19. Add a link to add to my Netflix Queue or Amazon Wish List

I would love to be able to add a movie to my Netflix queue or Amazon wish list with one click. Also would love it if ratings were synchronized. Synchronization with other systems is the future - you guys should be investigating!

  20. Easier way to compare and re-rate rated films

I'd really like a sort of "drag and drop" method of re-shuffling and reorganizing my various film ratings.

It would be really helpful if one could clearly contrast and compare, for instance, their 5-star films vs. their 4-star films vs. their 4.5-star films. Maybe there could be panels side by side which you could scroll through (a 5 star panel, 4.5 star panel, 4 star panel, etc.) where you could drag a film from one to another to change its rating.

The more films I rate, the more my rating-criteria change. For instance, a film I gave 5 stars a…
