  2. Bring Back "Buddies": a unique and interesting feature of the old version

I liked finding movies that my friends and I might have liked together. That feature seems to be missing (or at least hard for me to find) in the new beta.

We have started building this feature. We hope that it will be available by Spring.

  3. Recommendation Explanation

For example: "Movielens thinks you'll enjoy Fight Club, given that you highly rated Donnie Darko and Pulp Fiction"

Sometimes I have no Idea why I've gotten a certain recommendation

  4. Use my viewing habits to sort suggestions, not just predicted ratings.

MovieLens is great at predicting what I might rate films; I've got no problem with that. What it doesn't seem to predict all that well, however, is that I'm rarely going to be in the mood to watch foreign films from before 1970. Yeah, I will probably rate them highly, but some consideration should be made for my actual viewing habits - because those aren't the types of films I've told MovieLens that I regularly watch.

Out of the 542 films that I've rated on MovieLens, only 19 were from before 1970, and only 26 were foreign language. With that…

  6. Don't Simplify the Search Function!

I don't want to have to click an "advanced search" button. I liked the check boxes that were there previously. I use movielens specifically because it is a more advanced recommendation site.I don't want less options!

  7. API for creating and updating a profile

This is the best movie recommender...I want to incorporate movie lens recommendations into an app I am working on. Just want to be able to create account on movie lens for people coming from my site, add ratings for movies to movielens, and request movie predictions for other movies.

  8. Titles according to user language (localization)

IMDB shows the title of a film in my language (as guessed from my browser settings, I guess). Even if you keep the user interface in English, you should offer (at least in searches) my interface language (with fallbacks for same-language different-country titles), English and the original film language.

Thanks for the feedback! We do have a very international user base, so this makes sense.

  9. Set a movie as "seen" (without rating it)

Hi, I know you guys are working on recommandations and ratings, but for us (users), it would be great to be able to set a movie as seen, without rating it.
This is useful if you want to keep a "log" of what you know you have seen, but without having to rate it (either because you don't remember the movie or because you want to rate it later).

Thanks for the idea! We have certainly discussed this feature, and could implement it if it gathers support here.

  10. "Unexpected Likes" and "Unexpected Dislikes" on "About your ratings" page.

On the "About your ratings page", it would be great to have sections that show which of one's ratings have the largest positive/negative discrepancy with the (leave-one-out) predicted rating for that movie.

To put it another way, it would be great to be able to see one's own eccentricities with respect to the algorithm as well as with respect to the bulk of MovieLens users.

  11. Exclude genre filter

In the new version I can only choose which genre I want. I would also like the option to choose which genre I don't want. For example in the old version in advanced setting I could choose not to show documentaries. Sometimes you just don't know what movie you want to see but you know what you don't have a mood for.

  12. Filter by Length / Duration

Add a Length / Duration filter. Sometimes you have just a short amount of time and want to see something that fits that window. Other times, you are in the mood to see a 3 hour behemoth . Since the informations is already there, it shouldn't be diffcult to implement.

Thanks for the idea – yes, we do have the information to add that filter, good to know that there’s a use case!

  13. Hidden stars rating

Something that has always bothered me is that prediction rating often make my own rating biased, specially when it's a movie I saw a long time ago. It would be nice to have the ratings hidden by default and have a button or a mouse over even to reveal the predicted score.

Very true, we’ve found in our research that this is the case. It would be nice to have a “rating mode” where you can turn the predicted stars off.

  14. Kodi (XBMC) and Plex plugins?

Kodi (former XBMC) and Plex are the best HTPC software. The hardcode movie lovers are using them to organize and watch their movies.

What about of plugins for those?

  15. Link to films available on Netflix

It would be useful to be able to filter films by only those available on Netflix

Right now have to do a search for any film that has a high rating from movielens

  16. Export results option

I´ve like the option to export all my recomendations, my wishlist, my ratings or every list I can generate. So later I can analyze this in other software.
If this, I discovered that watched more Spielberg than I've liked... or cross later with my imdb list and verify what is diferent, what is missing.
Some data is never enough :)

  17. Occasionally "force" me to rate movies I've already rated.

I end up rating movies that I've recently seen much higher than similarly good movies from years ago. Giving me (users) an occasional movie to rate that I've already rated without my showing my previous rating might keep algorithms freshly accurate, or at least would provide additional data points. Complex? Yes, but perhaps quite valuable.

  18. Integrate with Letterboxd!

An integration with Letterboxd would be fantastic, because tags and ratings could automatically be sent over from one site to the other. I think it'd add for better suggestions, too, as you'd be able to base suggestions on how many times someone has seen a particular movie or genre.

Thanks for the suggestion. Letterboxd does provide RSS feeds, so this is theoretically possible. Let’s see if others vote for this feature.

  20. "Sorry, a problem occurred while importing your ratings."

I'm trying to import my ratings from IMDB and I'm receiving the following error:

"Sorry, a problem occurred while importing your ratings."

It happens within a few seconds. Any ideas?
