Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. ratings analysis : chart to see which are your "favorite" years.

After having seen the "release years of your rated movies" chart,
I was thinking about how would look a chart that analyze which are our "favorite" movie years, based on the movie ratings.
For a fan of sci-fi / horror, for example, it would be the 80's.

For a fan of superheroes, there would be a peak those years, etc.

How cool would that be ?

  2. DVD release status (was: buddies and DVD reases)

I like the interface but let's not loose functionality along the way. Buddies were great for selecting movies both me and my wife will enjoy and DVD format (= watch at home) having a small child is a basic functionality.

Thanks for the feedback. We’d like to add a feature where movielens knows more about format availability for the movies in our database.

We have a separate issue (with lots of support) for bringing back the buddies feature, so I retitled the ticket to reflect your request for DVD release status.

  3. need a filter to sort by recent dvd release

I would like to be able to see whether anything at redbox is worth renting

I’ll keep this idea open in case it attracts discussion. However, we have no ability to connect movielens ratings with Netflix ratings. We are planning to support import from imdb and export ratings pretty soon.

  6. Allow us to rate combinations of genres / tags.

For example I keep getting movies with the genres "Comedy, Romance" together which sums up the two things I most hate in a movie, comedy is good combined with other things (for argument's sake let's say action or adventure) and romance is also okay if it's a minor addition to other things, but if a movie is JUST comedy + romance I don't want to see it!

  7. add friends (via social media)

    functionalities:

see their statistics (as we can see our own which is nice!)
make recommendations to one of them or a group of people, write them 'personal reviews' (PR)

  8. Integration of tags and wish list

An alternative to the idea of allowing users to create their own lists.

I know you can create your own tags and view all of the tags you've created, but I feel like it makes more sense to combine this feature with your Wishlist. My vision is that there would be some sort of side bar including your Wishlist, followed by all of your tags (and perhaps the option to sort these tags in an order of your choosing).

That way you could have tags such as "Wishlist--Classics", "Wishlist--Top rated", "Wishlist--Foreign films", "Recommendations from Emi", "Favorite films", "Films for long…

  9. Next page button

It would be nice to have next page buttons at top and bottom of the page, and for the page to refresh so that you are at the top instead of needing to scroll to the top manually.

  10. Display list of movies for rating statistic

In the About your ratings, it shows graphs of movies based on year, rareness, etc. But it only gives the number, whereas I don't know which of my movies qualifies as "rare" or "common" and I'm also curious to see why I have a spike in movies from 1985-1990

  11. Predictions.

When I started using MovieLens (quite some time ago) I was perpetually surprised by the uncanny accuracy of predicted ratings. Now, 1153 ratings later, it seems the predications are almost never correct, to the point of being opposites. A two star prediction means I'll love it. Five stars and I might hate it.... Has something been drastically changed about the way the prediction system works?

I've read other user comments concerning predictions which mostly relate to their mood and everyday viewing preferences. I'm not at all concerned with viewing habits but if the predictions are so askew that I can't…

  12. Make link to IMDB re-use browser tab

I think that the old site behaved as follows: if you had already used a link to IMDB from ML, and did not close the resulting browser tab, clicking on a subsequent IMDB link from ML would re-use that tab. New UI creates a new browser tab for every IMDB link clicked. Maybe this is an IMDB issue, maybe a browser issue, maybe ML issue.

  13. change colours

I find the pale-ish blue against the white combined with the spacing between rows (with the ratings in blue) for the titles too hard to read.

On a film's page the right side details director, cast and release date but I would love to also see the writer.

  15. Offer a basic rating query for a specific movie

A query service for a specific movie would allow to show the predicted/rated rating of a movie on Netflix, alongside with IMDB,and rotten tomatoes (which can be queried for their ratings)

  16. Make the UI mouse friendly and keyboard friendly

Right now, in the main page, you cannot scroll horizontally with the mouse.
Before releasing a new version you should check that the UI can be operated by keyboard only and by mouse only.

  18. Placement of tags

I love the concept of tags in movielens. But it only works if enough people use them. I think one way to increase participation would be to place the tags at a more prominent place on the screen. They should be visible as soon as you open the movie page. At the moment you have to scroll down to see the tags. Personally, it took me a while to notice the feature and I think some casual users might completely overlook it.
Perhaps you could place a tag cloud next to the rating and movie info, along with an invitation…

Yes. We plan to put some tagging information in the header, as you suggest.

  19. Change criteria for a 'rare' movie

The criteria for a rare film on Movielens have some very weird results sometimes. For example, my list for the rarest movies I have rated lists films like 'Drinking Buddies' or 'Romantics Anonymous' alongside 'Now You See Me' or 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.
Now, I doubt that anyone would consider movies that make more than 300 Mio. as rare. I assume this is due to a certain selection bias, because movielens users are naturally more interested in rare movies than the general population.
I think this problem could be fixed very easily if you use the number of imdb…
