Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Why this project doesn't have a Github?

It would be great if exists any open repository with commiters and contributors and people could implement more interesting features together?

It’s a cool idea, and worth further consideration. However, it is currently unlikely to happen given MovieLens’s utility as a research platform for our graduate students.

  2. Discussion Forum

Will there be a forum for discussion? Preferably not the same format as the movielens q&a, maybe just a comments section at the bottom of each movie.

Nothing planned yet, but we are certainly open to this idea!

For context, we had a discussion forum in the mid-2000s that was pretty successful. We see the shift to the Q&A interface (maybe 2009?) as a failure, since that really dropped discussion activity.

  3. Suggest movies included in my Amazon Prime/Netflix subscription

It would be great if I could tell you that I have, say, an Amazon Prime UK account, and if you could then crawl their offering, suggesting titles that I might like that they have currently included in Prime. You could then directly link to the movies. Same goes for Netflix, and other regions.

  4. Stop recommending very old movies when I clearly do not watch/rate them.

Every time I try to come back and use the site I'm always driven away by the need to hide pages and pages of old movie recommendations.

  6. Remove wishlist movies from recommendations

Most of my recommendations are the movies that are already on my wishlist. It would be nice if my top recs listed were not all the movies that I already planned to watch anyway

  7. Search By: IMDB ID and/or TMDB ID

I'd like to be able to search by IMDB ID and/or TMDB ID, I noticed most of the movies have both of these IDs already indexed, it'd be cool if I could lookup a movie based on them.

    Example:
    https://movielens.org/explore?q=tt0114709

Should return Toy Story instead of an error.

  8. Separate playlists?

I have different expectations for an action movie than I do for a drama. Sometimes I am in the mood for something different than I am normally looking for.

Is it possible to create separate playlists? I want at least three playlists, one for movies that will make me think, one for movies that will make me feel, and one for mindless fun.

I think that Pandora handles this well. I generally like singer/songwriter mellow stuff (Sarah McLachlan, Dar Williams, The Hush Sound, Leonard Cohen), but I also like a little bit of metal (Sabaton, Nightwish). Putting them on a…

Great idea. We’ve been pondering “mood-based recommendations” for a while.

  9. Filter by duration

I don't know why don't you allow to filter by the duration of the film. Sometimes I want to find a recommended short film and other times I don't want/have time for a 3 hours movie so i want them out.

  10. Links to external movie sites

Before, there were automatic links to the rottentomateos, netflix, and imdb sites. those were helpful, and adding more would be neat too, such as AMAZON (my vote) or Hulu...any others?

We’ve taken the easy first step by adding links to IMDB and TMDB.

The harder second step is coming: add arbitrary links (e.g., amazon). We will probably need our members to add/maintain those links, so that will require more development.

Happy to hear suggestions for more sites to link to.

  11. merge tags

An option to merge tags, which are the same, but spelled differently. For example, I saw sci-fy. sc-fy and sci fi. In the "+" menu there could be "Merge into..." command which would ask to select another tag, remove the tag on which is was executed, merge it into the specified one and include its votes into the latter

  12. Override ratings on import

Please add an option to override ratings when importing from imdb.

(Or a button to erase all ratings but you probably want to keep all possible data)

  13. Put a programmatic application programming interface on MovieLens.

I want to use MovieLens recommendations in my other applications which I develop. A web service API would allow me access without wasting time with webscraping.

  14. Is it possible to allow users to import ratings from other websites?

    Hi,

I marked about 500 movies from a website and it will be much convenient if we can import ratings from other websites.

I know it might be difficult to deal with every movie websites, then is it possible to provide a movie lens API so that users can import theirs scores through the API themselves?

    Thanks

  16. Top Pics - Sort on Recommended

I don't understand why, when viewing top picks, ordered by "recommended", movies aren't sorted by the star rating Movielens predicts for me. For instance, the first movie in my Top Picks has a prediction of 3.5 stars. The second movie has 4 stars. Further down there might be a movie with 4.5 stars.

Surely, when ordered by "recommended", it should be recommended by stars descending? Or how is it sorted?

  17. Use IMDb plot keywords instead of tags (was: Tags)

Curently the tag system is very chaotic and if you don't change it will become worse (see listal.com -> "women i would not even look at" tags)

Why not using the official IMDB plot keywords as tags?

Users should be only able to select the pre-defined ones.

E.g. "bad" is just disturbing. Or "hot" or "boobs"...

    See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429493/keywords?ref_=tt_stry_kw for example.

    And http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Keywords/

Also all tags should be written lowercase.

Thanks for the feedback. It is extremely unlikely that we will replace our tagging feature with IMDb plot keywords, but there are some other interesting ideas in here.

  18. Give the option to hide current ratings for a film

When I'm thinking what I rate a film, seeing what the current rating is could easily influence my choice.

  19. Improving Buddies - Opt-In Match-Making Service?

Your softwares predicts how someone will like certain movies by examining how others with similar tastes enjoy those movies. Why not offer a means of allowing interested users with similar tastes to get to know each other?

[Maybe that's what forums are for? I am not someone who uses forums yet.]

  20. Include Alternate Movie Titles

Searching for movie titles in the old movielens was more effective for various of reasons. If my memory is not wrong, it used a different matching algorithm which looked for titles with similar words so misspellings could be usable. But more importantly, titles for foreign movies included English title and original language title (with English spelling if necessary!). The new search model makes it difficult to find some movies because they are known to many by a different name. Showing and allowing to search by alternate movie would titles can be very useful including the case when the alternate movie…
