Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Filter by outside ratings

Everytime I see a recommendation of a movie I don't know, I check rotten tomstoes for its rating and, most of the time, I only watch it if it has a high enough rating. So, I would love to see some kind of filter that allowed me to filter my recommendations by movies with a rotten tomatoes or imdb rating above a certain threshold.

  2. Include Alternate Movie Titles

Searching for movie titles in the old movielens was more effective for various of reasons. If my memory is not wrong, it used a different matching algorithm which looked for titles with similar words so misspellings could be usable. But more importantly, titles for foreign movies included English title and original language title (with English spelling if necessary!). The new search model makes it difficult to find some movies because they are known to many by a different name. Showing and allowing to search by alternate movie would titles can be very useful including the case when the alternate movie…

  3. The Star colors have changed!

In the old movie lens, predictions were in red and what you've rated is in blue but that has switched, I find it a little confusing. It will probably be ok down the line when the new site is launched and only seeing the new way, but just wondering if there was a specific reason this was done

Interesting! Hadn’t thought users would care. Let’s see if this issue gets more support.

The two reasons for the current choice:

    1. part of our new site’s color palette
    2. we wanted the “rated” color to be more vibrant than the “predicted” color (unlike the current site).

  4. I dont want to watch this

Sometimes you may not wat the watch one of the recomendations, having the ability to say 'not now' or 'not ever' to a recomendation would be good, especially if the features of that movie where used to filter our similar movies from being recomended in the future

  5. Improving Buddies - Opt-In Match-Making Service?

Your softwares predicts how someone will like certain movies by examining how others with similar tastes enjoy those movies. Why not offer a means of allowing interested users with similar tastes to get to know each other?

[Maybe that's what forums are for? I am not someone who uses forums yet.]

  6. Show a detailed list of all the factors that went into each movie recommendation.

I'd love to see a list like:

You loved star wars, we think you'll like X because they both have:
    - The hero's journey
    - Parental loss
    - Magical wizard helpers
    - Fight against evil
    - Political oppression
    - Some romance
    - Set in space
    - Childhood innocence shattered

It would require that you categorize movies with a lot of granularity, of course, but that's the kind of data I imagine a movie recommendation engine has?

    Yes? No?

  7. Add a link to add to my Netflix Queue or Amazon Wish List

I would love to be able to add a movie to my Netflix queue or Amazon wish list with one click. Also would love it if ratings were synchronized. Synchronization with other systems is the future - you guys should be investigating!

  8. List of favorite directors based on ratings

    Hi,

I so enjoy and appreciate this site! It is fantastic! I thought a cool idea would be if a list of favorite directors could be generated based on your ratings.

  9. Private Tags as well as community tags for the special needs

"Eric's Dvds", "Owned", "lord of the ring", "love It. dan", "hell ya!", "box", "seen at the cinema", "2" are just a few of the less interesting gems for Forrest Gump. There is nothing to stop MovieLens from analysing private tags if it anything this has the benefit of greater personalisation while not creating a steaming pile. Sure "owned" has some sort of a correlation toward rating but this has no benefit to the community and is just clutter.

  10. Easier way to compare and re-rate rated films

I'd really like a sort of "drag and drop" method of re-shuffling and reorganizing my various film ratings.

It would be really helpful if one could clearly contrast and compare, for instance, their 5-star films vs. their 4-star films vs. their 4.5-star films. Maybe there could be panels side by side which you could scroll through (a 5 star panel, 4.5 star panel, 4 star panel, etc.) where you could drag a film from one to another to change its rating.

The more films I rate, the more my rating-criteria change. For instance, a film I gave 5 stars a…

  11. More movies per page (100, 500)

Sometimes, I go through movies with a low rate count and try to find some I've seen. I know it helps you guys. With the very limited number of movies displayed per page however, it is tedious. If I could choose 500 movies per page, that would be great :)

  12. Would be MUCH BETTER If i could rate "actors"

Wish i could rate actors.. There're some movies I'll never watch if there's some actor I dislike in it. I hate poor acting =\

  13. Procedural List generation for external use

Being able to build a exportable/externally accessable list of our rated or recommended movies would allow integration with other software and/or websites and increase the value and usefulness of this recommendation engine.
(Native integration with Radarr would be even better, but I accept that's a long shot.)

  15. Information on where to stream each movie

Congrats on the algorithm! it's the best I've seen. Now I have a list of all the movies I want to see....it'd be great to know in which streaming service I can find each, instead of looking for them one by one.

    Cheers

  16. Prevent addition of films where the release date is years away

Some genious added many super hero films to imdb which are not due to be released until much much later. One has a release date set for 2019!? Prevent this kind of behaviour some way. Mission Impossible 5 has also already been on the site for many months yet no action has been taken (at least I flagged it when it was added). People are actually rating these too which distorts recommendations.

We would love to do this, too. We are still considering our options, since it’s not totally clear how to get this data.
