Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Spirit recommender

Just signed up for the new recommendation engine and nearly opted out immediately after, because my new top picks do not match my taste at all. But I just realized that this is just because the first two pages are littered exclusively with obscure asian trash movies which received a five star prediction. After the first two pages, the recommendations actually look sensible. So this might in fact be a bug in the algorithm?

Hi Janus, thanks for volunteering to try our experimental code, and sorry about the fail. There is a problem in the implementation that you’re observing, and that we will fix really soon.

  2. Recommenedation based on "semantics" of the email address?

I used my private email for signing up and a nickname that has nothing to do with the email. my email address includes my surname which is slavic. I've got quite of few top recommendations for Russian movies. Is this a coincidence or part of the algorithm? If it is a part of the algorithm you might want to look into that and probably tweek it, there are enough slavic people/descendents of such who are not at aimiable terms with the Russian culture. Absolutely no offence to the Russian movies! It just stroke me that those recommendations came up, and you…

We do not use email addresses to recommend movies. Your recommendations are based on your ratings.

  3. Bring the Buddy search to the new Movielens website

That's the primary feature I use Movielens for. If you were to get rid of that feature entirely, I probably wouldn't use the site.

Closing as a duplicate of the current #1 feature request.

  4. refine search results by year!

I'd very much like to refine my search results by year.

That is possible. Add a release date filter to any search. We’re investigating ways to make “advanced search” easier and faster to use.

  5. Opening movies in new tabs option.

When you are browsing the movies clicking on a movie recomendation will open it up in a new tab.

  6. Bring back the stars Legend

From time to time I forget if a 3 star movie was Good or Ok and so on for other star ratings. The legend helps me(us) be consistant with rating movies.

  8. Display Issue: "Sort By" dropdown on search result page [and elsewhere]

    On page: https://movielens.org/explore?q=Amateur

    sort by:

    recommended

    ratings

    release date
    date added

Currently pops out to the right, due to "excellent" UI positioning in the first place, this results in half of it not appearing offscreen to the right in Chrome and 1/3 in IE. This needs to pop in to the left in its current position, seriously where was the testing? It is a bizarre world out there, and perhaps it is self-fulfilling design philosophy but features such as "sort by" should not be dismissed, users do use such features if they are CLEARLY made available and EASY to use.…

I have no idea what you are asking for – would you please clarify?

  10. Way to filter by release year

Would be nice having a configurable filter by release year. Have been recommended 70~80's movies I will probably never watch and are cluttering my recommendation list =.

You can add a “release date” filter to any search (see the dropdown). Does this get you what you’re looking for? Possibly you’re looking for a way to make these filters more persistent.

  11. Bring Back the Star Legend Ratings Guide

Hi! Dig the new site, but I really miss the "Star Legend" ratings guide that was in the upper right-hand corner of the old site. I can't find it anywhere. It's necessary, because different sites use different ratings criteria. For example, Goodreads.com uses a five-star system where two stars is "It was OK", but on Movielens, two stars means "Fairly Bad".

  12. Can you please distinguish films that I have already seen from those that I haven't?

I don't remember every film I've seen and I used to look up Movielens to check. This is not possible anymore, as there is no difference in layout for recommended ratings and existing ratings. I find the new layout altogether pretty shit if I may say so. After many years and more than 1300 rated films I am seriously considering giving it a rest.

Does https://movielens.org/explore/your-ratings not work for you? Also, click the “list view” for the no-graphics view, which you would probably prefer.

You are not the first user to say negative things about the interface without suggesting anything helpful. Use classic.movielens.org.

  13. troubleshooting

Sorry to hear that. If you describe how it’s worse, then we can try to make it better. Surprisingly, we are not actually trying to ruin your experience.

  15. MovieLens does not seem to be sorting correctly.

When I view the list of top picks for me, and chose the sort option "recommended", I notice that the sorting does not entirely correspond to the predicted star ratings. For example I have several 4 star predicted movies mixed in with 4.5 star movies in the sorted list.

    Thanks for the bug report.

That is actually by design – we now take a number of factors into account when building lists of recommended movies. Predicted rating is the most important factor, but no longer the only factor.

  17. New Image-Based version inferior to Old Text-based Version

I gave comments before when I was in the beta similar to the comments I am making now.

I MUCH PREFER THE OLD VERSION, which was highly text-based and with lots of detail to draw from.

I doubt you're going to go back to the old ways but please try to build out this version to increase the amount of detail and ease of manipulation and control that the old version had.

I'm disappointed that you choose to make the image-based version mandatory.

Thanks again for the feedback. Two things to note, if you haven’t noticed:

    1. classic.movielens.org
    2. you can click on “list view” on any search result for a more compact representation of the lists of movies

  18. And why did the "buddies" function disappear?

What's with the removal of the "buddies" function?

  19. New site design is truly awful

    Where is the advanced search?

I hate the new site design. I find the dumbed-down, Amazon/Google like interface awful, superficial, and unhelpful.

Why do you think people really use movielens? For me, it is certainly not to be presented with pointless images and prettied-up pages that aren't functional.

And by the way, I'm not using a mobile/cellphone to access the site. The assumption seems to be that the site user is using their thumb to navigate. That is an incorrect assumption. I want functionality and useful features, not dumbed-down pretty pages.

    Scrap it please.

Please include constructive thoughts in future messages, and we will consider them. Mean-spirited rants don’t actually help us much, though they do make us feel badly. Please keep in mind that this is a free service developed by a research lab, not a commercial venture.

In the meantime, just keep using classic.movielens.org.

  20. why different recommenders if i cant compare them?

if i could sort by "your rating vs predicted rating" i would have an idea. the whole point of this website for me is to get accurate predictions. looking through 50+ films to have an idea which recommender works best for me is not a thing i wanna do

Because we are a research lab, and we are attempting to learn from that feature. Both “the wizard” and “the warrior” have similar accuracy characteristics.

If you don’t like the feature, don’t use it.
