Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Add a "Classics" category!

It's not a genre per se, but it would be great if you had a "Classics" genre, for people like me really trying to educate themselves about the most famous "oldies". I know you can research movies by release year, but I still think it would be great if they had their own category.

  3. Please let us exclude wishlisted items from recommendations!

There are a couple others on here who asked for this but it's been years with no feedback onto whether you were going to do this!

  4. Rework site code to use links

Currently almost everything on site uses JS to open pages. This makes opening new tabs close to impossible and very annoying. Like this feedback window, it links to home page instead of having a proper url. Movies "links" too aren't links.

  5. Description of what MovieLens does if I hide a movie.

Is it simply ignored, or does the act of hiding it, cause it to be rated 1star?

  6. Bring back old format

This one does not show release date and is less easy to navigate. Also, why are you allowing so many shorts and old, obscure films?

  7. Put the Add to wishlist button back on movie icon

I loved before the new look being able to just add movie to wishlist when seeing it in some list. Now I have to either click the three dots or open the movie page to access that function.

  8. Put back the pin button

I want the pin button to be accessed from the movie "card". Now I have to click the new button in the upper right corner to and then to click "Pin".

It's a good practice to put important UI elements on top, not to hide them in a submenu.

  9. Search by low rated (rare), aspects of storylines, settings (beach)

Some people (I am in this camp) enjoy low-rated movies - think: The Room. Secondly, rather than focusing on recommendations by movies in the same genre and/or by similar rating, I believe there are people that liked watching a movie like Point Break and then want to see more movies that feature surfing and/or the beach. To my last search question, the emphasis being on the location. This isn't a novel idea - people watch that include snow around Christmas. People watch movies that include bodies of water in the summer.

  10. after clicking on a movie allow for easy closing of movie and back to list

I click on a movie from my recommended list and it seems like the only way to get back to my list is to hit my browsers back button. Could you make something that would just close the movie (a pop-out like this?) and then you are back to the list?

  11. Additional genre: Surrealism

There's some films on here where the best way to describe them would be "Surrealism". However, movies like Eraserhead are getting called "Fantasy" instead. Fantasy is typically meant for films that take the world and fantasize it in some semi-realistic way, or even create a completely different world that isn't too unlike our own; surrealist films completely break down the world and have far less sense and order to them. I don't feel fantasy is an adequate description of some of the more surreal films, and I think it would be best if they were labeled "surrealism" instead.

  14. content warning/ability to have questions answered about movie

I have PTSD and would like to be able to ask general questions about certain content. I realize that there is a lot of animosity towards "trigger warnings" and feelings that it's often misused, but there are times I genuinely really want to see a movie, but can't find any information about whether it contains certain content. Basically, I'm often forced to limit myself to light comedies which are great, but I like to branch out. If there's any way this issue could be addressed even if not through being able to have questions answered, I'd really love that, but…

  17. Explain Zero Rating Predictions

Hi, I’ve been here since the very beginning.

I think you ought to explain to users how you can make a prediction with zero ratings. It would seem to break the model of how this works.

  18. Advanced statistics

One thing I enjoy a lot on movielens is that I can see my own watching and rating behaviour. For instance by comparing the "number of movies watched in genre X" and "average rating in genre X" it becomes clear, that the more movies I watch in any particular genre, the lower the average rating gets.

I would like to see even more statistics. One feature could be to give an overview of the most common tags among the movies I watched, or tags the highest rated movies have in common.

  19. Be cool to see which actors or directors have the highest avg. star rating from own ratings

Have an avg score beside highest 10 actors from movies rated.
    Same for directors.
Having stats for how many movies viewed with certain stars or directors in would be interesting to see!
Thanks for this site, The recommendations have been more hit than miss!

  20. Statistics

It would be really interesting to make deeper the stats part of the website, and especially i would like to see the number of movies rated sorted by country of production.
