Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.
Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

Make the UI mouse friendly and keyboard friendly
Right now, in the main page, you cannot scroll horizontally with the mouse.
Before releasing a new version you should check that the UI can be operated by keyboard only and by mouse only.1 vote -

On a film's page the right side details director, cast and release date but I would love to also see the writer.

Filter by outside ratings
Everytime I see a recommendation of a movie I don't know, I check rotten tomstoes for its rating and, most of the time, I only watch it if it has a high enough rating. So, I would love to see some kind of filter that allowed me to filter my recommendations by movies with a rotten tomatoes or imdb rating above a certain threshold.

Change criteria for a 'rare' movie
The criteria for a rare film on Movielens have some very weird results sometimes. For example, my list for the rarest movies I have rated lists films like 'Drinking Buddies' or 'Romantics Anonymous' alongside 'Now You See Me' or 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.
Now, I doubt that anyone would consider movies that make more than 300 Mio. as rare. I assume this is due to a certain selection bias, because movielens users are naturally more interested in rare movies than the general population.
I think this problem could be fixed very easily if you use the number of imdb…1 vote -
Add the ability to sort "My Ratings" alphabetically.
I'm surprised this isn't in your list of sorting options for My Ratings already.

Show films I added
I'd like a way to find which films I added to the database. Thus I could find what the rest of the users would think about those films.

I liked being able to control how many movies I saw per page
I really can control the amount of information I'm getting in the old version. The pictures are nice but I like Movie lens for the control and the information! Improved graphics are nice but they're secondary to me.

Improving Buddies - Opt-In Match-Making Service?
Your softwares predicts how someone will like certain movies by examining how others with similar tastes enjoy those movies. Why not offer a means of allowing interested users with similar tastes to get to know each other?
[Maybe that's what forums are for? I am not someone who uses forums yet.]

Use IMDb plot keywords instead of tags (was: Tags)
Curently the tag system is very chaotic and if you don't change it will become worse (see listal.com -> "women i would not even look at" tags)
Why not using the official IMDB plot keywords as tags?
Users should be only able to select the pre-defined ones.
E.g. "bad" is just disturbing. Or "hot" or "boobs"...
See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429493/keywords?ref_=tt_stry_kw for example.
And http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Keywords/
Also all tags should be written lowercase.
10 votesThanks for the feedback. It is extremely unlikely that we will replace our tagging feature with IMDb plot keywords, but there are some other interesting ideas in here.

Cleaner movie grid - just show movies and titles (was: Less is more)
It's a bit too busy, distracting and hard on the eyes. On the start page, where it lists all the movies as little rectangles, I'd recommend removing the ratings, minutes, year for each movie. Just have the movie name and poster. It would result in a much cleaner look. People can always see that info by clicking on the movie.

Personal ratings renormalization
My ratings are now extremely tightly distributed (I think; there's no way to see a histogram(?)) ... and they naturally get tighter over time, because I know if I change my rating scale I'll throw everything out of whack.
I'd love to (1) have a button to redistribute all my previous ratings onto a more uniform distribution, and (2) have a reference point for what these ratings mean for me, like a percentile or an example of a movie I've previously rated at that level (and maybe even one a half-star above and below!).
1 voteInteresting ideas!
Renormalizing is hard, since we would have to guess (e.g.) which of your 3 star ratings are really the “better” 3 star ratings that should be moved up.
Potentially we could explore a semi-automated interface (we make a guess, you get to fine-tune it) for renormalizing ratings.
The reference point ideas are interesting, but obviously present design challenges. We’ve done a bit of research work in this space, possibly we could promote these types of interfaces to movielens.

A histogram of your ratings is coming in the next release.

Clean ratings
It's hard to think about unbiased rating when I'm looking at the predictions and statistics. It would be nice to have a UX flow where that information is not visible before I enter a rating.
4 votesGood feedback. We would like to provide an unbiased interface for rating movies.

left-right scroll needs more stuff
The left-right scrolling is a cool idea, but the behavior is odd when the contents are just slightly wider than the width of the window. Being able to wiggle each row just a little doesn't seem to add much value. Having more stuff in each row, or chopping off one element, might be better.
1 voteThanks for the ideas. Yes, that scrolling is a little wonky, especially for folks who are using a mouse. We’re planning to address this at some point.

Allow users to pick favorite genres (was: The selection of obvious genres is questionable)
When I press the "Explore" button I found a list of genres half of which are irrelevent for me. Either make the list of obvious genres dynamically chosen for my account, or let me configure it, or give me more of them in the menu, or whatever.
It gives me
animation
comedy
documentary
foreign (this is no a genre dammit!) Foreign to whom????I'd rather see
adventure
file noir
eastern
westernso most of the times I will have to click twice.

Ask for system re-application ideas
Ask users in what other areas a recommendation system like this could be applied where it currently may not be. Beyond the noise, maybe a user will come up with an idea that's insightful, cool and compelling.

Provide overview of lens system
Give thorough basics of how and why the system works. This may lead to more insightful user feedback, plus, in a certain sector, generate more user interest and involvement.
1 voteThanks for the idea!

More direct tag exposure
Let user see tag cluster associated with their tuner, recommender.
Have interface to let user define and save tag clusters for searching.
2 votesThanks – interesting ideas!

Nice to know more about the workings of the system.
How are film descriptive words generated, derived and matched?
What are the film variables?
How are variables used to form groups? Are film and/or book preference significantly correlated to preferences or aptitudes in other areas -- sports, hobbies, types of social activities, learning strategies, diversity of interests, etc.

Recollecting memory, improve film recognition
Often I do not intentionally watch a movie. I just come across on telly (HBO, Film1, or just any other) I look how far in it is and if acceptable (20-30 mins) continue watching.
The current overview of thumbnails is alright but what do i do here? What is the task in my mind? Rating movies! And for rating movies, I think:
- the amount of movies is good, but
- the thumbnails are too small
- would be nice to see move thumbnails of the same move when hovering over
- would be nice to have "infinity" page instead…1 voteThanks for the feedback!
