Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Sort by length

This would be a very useful feature if at all possible.

  3. Add Content Rating Filtering

It would be nice to be able to filter out R rated movies.

It annoys me when I'm looking for a movie to watch with my mum and all I can find are R rated movies.

    Loving the site!

  4. low rated item to be excluded

I thought the low rated items are treated as negative weight. I would not like to see movies similar to low rated ones.
Although I saw many movies I prefer the quality one. I love sci-fi, but based on my profile... it seems I prefer music related ones. That's why there are few high quality sci-fi movies. Too many actions and visual applealing kills the spirit of the movie. :(

  5. Allow Mobile IMDB URLs to Add a Movie

When adding a movie, you don't accept mobile IMDB URLs. I mostly rate and add movies on my phone so every time I copy&paste a URL from IMDB I have to manually change m.IMDb.com to www.IMDb.com in the URL. Other than the change of "m" to "www" the URLs are identical. This feature should be an easy change to the movielebs code.

  6. Top Picks

I find the way the new movielens handles top picks confusing. I expect to see a list sorted by predicted "star"levels, but unlike classic movielens, the list is obviously not sorted in that order.

If the list is not sorted by what I am predicted to like, then how is it sorted? By what movielens wants me to like or watch?

I would like a list sorted by predictions for me. I could then scan the list jumping over any recommendations I'm not interested in. In the classic movielens, if I knew I wanted to watch a particular genre, I…

  8. Correlate the age of the rating, the age of the audience and the age of the film.

Some movies I have rated based on the impression I had watching them when I was a kid. Was it great back then, some tens of years ago? Definitely. Would I watch it today? Hardly.

The MovieLens itself quickly approaches 20 years of age. The first ratings on the movies back then have had been done by the people 20 years younger than they are today.

I am willing to share my year of birth with MoviLens if that would help with the predictions.

  9. Custom lists

It would be nice to be able to make lists like "best of 2014" for example.

  11. Search Word Order should be irrelevant.

Struck for the name of a movie, tried to search for "Anonymous Authors" [without quotations] which came up with no predictive suggestions in dropdown nor any search results as the movie title is "Authors Anonymous". Also in tag search, the same search implementation is concurrent.

The order should not matter, many users may give up and in longer titles, the number of permutations will increase many fold. Finally, the movie title in the database may not match the exact title word order that users will commonly know the movie by, or may not match one of the many various titles…

  12. dismiss recommendation

Easily dismiss recommendation, i now hide the movie
There are movies that i do not intent to see, so i cannot rate them negatively because i haven't seen them, but i want the "system" to know not to recommend them.

  13. Include Alternate Movie Titles

Searching for movie titles in the old movielens was more effective for various of reasons. If my memory is not wrong, it used a different matching algorithm which looked for titles with similar words so misspellings could be usable. But more importantly, titles for foreign movies included English title and original language title (with English spelling if necessary!). The new search model makes it difficult to find some movies because they are known to many by a different name. Showing and allowing to search by alternate movie would titles can be very useful including the case when the alternate movie…

  16. Rate Attributes eg Director(s), Cast, Length

Treat attributes like tags and allow for the ability to mark as "like" about attribute or dislike that attribute about movie. This would have a catastrophic effect on improving predicted ratings if used correctly. For instance, being able to specifically rate / tell movielens that a rom-com was enjoyable in terms of the romance / drama genres but the comedy was off would be great or vice-versa. It would also likely increase "important" tags [statistically significant / even if tags are not used, attribute ratings could be more easily used / most beneficial to community as well regardless of if…

  17. Private Tags as well as community tags for the special needs

"Eric's Dvds", "Owned", "lord of the ring", "love It. dan", "hell ya!", "box", "seen at the cinema", "2" are just a few of the less interesting gems for Forrest Gump. There is nothing to stop MovieLens from analysing private tags if it anything this has the benefit of greater personalisation while not creating a steaming pile. Sure "owned" has some sort of a correlation toward rating but this has no benefit to the community and is just clutter.

  18. Case Insensitive Tags and Search

A tag of "ABCD" should be treated the same as "abcd" ["aBcD" or any other combination] in tag database. It is absurd to differentiate between cases, the tags are not very precise semantic data and applying a programmers convention to community data is backward and lazy. One method / function is all it takes to clean up the mess.

Furthermore, when making a search, all input should be converted to whatever case the database is stored in so again, "ABC" matches "Abc" which matches "abC" etc.

At least to me, the system gives a lot of movies that I already saw as recommended, but very few movies that I was considering if I should see or not

  20. Kodi (XBMC) and Plex plugins?

Kodi (former XBMC) and Plex are the best HTPC software. The hardcode movie lovers are using them to organize and watch their movies.

What about of plugins for those?
