separate movies that are on DVD and movies in theaters.
I think it would be helpful to make a distinction between the movies in theaters and movies available in DVD.

Don't display existing ratings
You will probably get ratings closer to what the user actually feels if you don't display the existing rating for the film. Maybe a 'recommendation mode' where the rating is displayed and a 'rating mode' where it isn't?

Put a programmatic application programming interface on MovieLens.
I want to use MovieLens recommendations in my other applications which I develop. A web service API would allow me access without wasting time with webscraping.

Rank a list of movies which a user supplies.
I have a list of movies which I want MovieLens to rank as to which ones I would like the most. This list is shorter than the MovieLens universe of movies.

Standardise common tags
For example, should I usefully be tagging a Japanese animated film 'animated', 'animation', 'anime' or 'cartoon'? It seems a few standardised tags would neaten the database a little.
Could be combined with the earlier 'auto-complete' suggestion.

Gay interest genre
I often look to your site to attempt to find a half decent gay movie (the way he looks, boys, free fall, etc) and I always struggle to do so. An easier mechanism to find such movies would be greatly appreciated by both myself and countless other users.

Share lists by tag/link
I'd like to be able to share a list of kids movies that I tagged with a unique identifier to a family member by pasting the link to them. For instance: https://movielens.org/explore?tag=Itaege&hasRated=ignore&sortBy=tagScore
Tried it already (the family member made an account to view the link) and did not work as expected.

Let unregistered users see movies page
I like to share what i see on facebook, with the link to the page, but my friends cant see the movie info without registering ... People should be allowed to see the movie page at least =)

Search autocomplete & results don't match
When you type something into the search field you get some autocomplete suggestions, but when you perform the search not all suggestions are shown in the results.
For example:
I type in "boot"
I get the following suggestions: Das Boot, Phone Booth, Booty Call, Puss in Boots (in addition to this, it also matches people)
I click search
I get the following results: Boot Camp, Das BootThe autocomplete search seems to do partial matching ("boot" matches "booty"), but the actual search results only does exact matching.
I would like the search to give partial matches just like the autocomplete…

Friends' recently rate movies
The old website allowed you to share an RSS feed of your recently rated movies with friends, a feature that no longer exists. Will this sort of feature ever be implemented again?
Assuming the infrastructure exists in the form of a buddy/friend system, I think sharing your ratings and seeing how your friends rated movies would add greatly to the fun.

new site's search filtering much more cumbersome
The old site, with all search options in a left-hand tile, was much easier to use. Now you're devoting LOTS of pixels to thumnails of DVD jackets; I find them rather useless. Instead you spoon-feed the search options, so it is MUCH more tedious to, say, select a genre, a medium type (DVD vs. theatrical), and a release date.

Import jinni.com personal ratings
Jinni.com has just ended their service and sent everyone's personal ratings to their email. Therefore, lots of people would like to import their ratings to MovieLens.
Please, make your import thingy to work its magic with jinni's rating file in csv-format! All you need to do is to match Title.

tag auto completion when entering new tags to movies
It would be useful if one got auto completion suggestions for tags when adding new tags to movies. Similar to what happens when you type in a word in the search bar.

Please take a look at Jinni.com. There site is the best movie and tv show personalized recommendation site out there. They even give recommendations on what to watch on your tv (dish, direct tv, etc.) in the upcoming schedule. Also, Jinni.com is closing their site.

Add search tools and filters to the 'Similar Movies' list
Suppose I want recommendations for movies similar to 'Gravity'. scrolling down the movie page, I see the 'Similar Movies' list, but some of the movies there are movies I've already watched and rated. Even when selecting 'see more', I can't filter out the rated movies.

indicate "already seen" near a film
today Movielens recommend to me the godfather.
maybe i have not yet rated this film (i don't remember).
anayway, i don't want to see this film recommended to me again, so could you maybe make a button available "already seen ?"Best Regards

Getting my mood about a movie
I see very rarely emotional tags put on a movie. But I think it is very important, but most of the time it is just not trivial to the user to share why really liked that movie.
Not sure how, but these latent factors would be more useful for me to find a movie fitting my current attitude.1 vote
