Be able to search without opening menu
Pretty self explanatory. Looks like there's plenty of room for a search bar, and possibly a few more shortcuts, without clicking the little "open menu" button.
We reorganized the search a bit so that it is easier to reach. We also added a keyboard shortcut – you can type “/” to open the search box any time.
(update)
We now have a search box that is always present at the top of the page.

Nice to have a shortcut, but you may not be aware, Firefox ALSO uses '/' for Find, and it grabs the keystroke before you can. So unfortunately for Firefox users, there is in effect no movielens Search shortcut.

@marc - thanks for the feedback. Two thoughts. 1. yes, we should probably not have a button on high resolution screens, that's a TODO. 2. if it helps, we've wired up the / key as a shortcut to show and select the search box.

I regularly look up movies on MovieLens to see if it's a movie I might enjoy. I think it would make much more sense if the search bar was always displayed, rather than having to click the search button. Also, it doesn't take up much screen space.
