Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

How can we improve MovieLens? (if you have multiple suggestions, please submit them separately)

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. filter tv shows that look like movies

    There's several movies that are actually just tv series. And they're pretty easy to tell, for instance there's "The Stand" that is over 300 minutes long. And the recommendation engine keeps picking those

  3. MORE NEGATIVE TAGS

    Hello! The best feature I found on this site is the "tags" system.

    I found it to be more useful than the recommendation system.

    But; I think in order to make better use of this feature we need MORE NEGATIVE TAGS.

    I will give examples:

    I liked Amelie, and I clicked on it's (very accurate I think) tag "quirky", and found a very good movie about hacking. Watched it, liked it, tagged it "hacking".

    Then by browsing movies tagged "hacking" I found "Swordfish".

    But I didn't like the movie "Swordfish" and I tagged it "State Propaganda".

  4. Move links higher on the page

    The links to my wishlist and watched films are at the very bottom of the page, which is very inconvenient. Perhaps they could be moved to the top or have a bar on the side to make them more accessible.

  5. Slow website

    The movielens website takes a long time for me to load and it is also slow when I click on something. Is there any chance you could speed it up? It really affects how much I use this platform.

  6. Portuguese!

    I can help translate the interface to Brazilian Portuguese :D
    I love movielens and I want my friends to be able to enjoy it as well. The imdb titles are mostly already translated.

  7. Please remove the duplicate "TV movie" genre

    When I view my movie stats there is a duplicate genre for TV Movie. One has correct capitalization, and your current algorithms recognize that data point. There is a 2nd genre called "TV movie", which is incorrectly capitalized. Your system does not recognize this as a usable data point. Somewhere in your lines of code a single letter is mis-typed, resulting in a duplication of the TV Movie genre label (which likely has very few movies assigned to it, if any).

  8. Show the movie name in the tab

    In Chrome, it just shows "MovieLens" in the tab title. It would be nice if it also showed the name of the movie you have opened in that tab, for faster navigation when you have multiple tabs open. This is what Rotten Tomatoes does.

  10. Be able to sort by language of the movie (as in ML Classic)

    Pr I'd like to be able to look for say: "Italian" movies and then specify say:"comedies". I can't do that now. When I put in "foreign" under Genre, I get 5 results.

  11. Movie recommendations based on a specific set of films

    Hi, when I want to see a movie I oftentimes want to see a movie that is similar to or has the same atmosphere/vibe as a couple of other movies that pop up in my head. Wouldn't it be a great idea to make it possible to get movie recommendations not only from the total of your ratings but also get recommendations based on a selection of a few "favourite" movies?

    For example: I very much enjoy movies A, B and C. I have however not given them my highest rankings since I do not consider them the best movies…

  13. Add a "Classics" category!

    It's not a genre per se, but it would be great if you had a "Classics" genre, for people like me really trying to educate themselves about the most famous "oldies". I know you can research movies by release year, but I still think it would be great if they had their own category.

  15. Please let us exclude wishlisted items from recommendations!

  16. Rework site code to use links

    Currently almost everything on site uses JS to open pages. This makes opening new tabs close to impossible and very annoying. Like this feedback window, it links to home page instead of having a proper url. Movies "links" too aren't links.

  19. Put the Add to wishlist button back on movie icon

    I loved before the new look being able to just add movie to wishlist when seeing it in some list. Now I have to either click the three dots or open the movie page to access that function.

  20. Put back the pin button

    I want the pin button to be accessed from the movie "card". Now I have to click the new button in the upper right corner to and then to click "Pin".

    It's a good practice to put important UI elements on top, not to hide them in a submenu.
