Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Options to hide posters / alternative layout

I personally have zero use for the posters. Completely unnecessary clutter. So at minimum an option to hide the posters would be nice. A more preferred approach would be an alternative layout similar to the current old layout. I want to see much information easily and dislike "dumbed down" mobile layouts which hide nearly all relevant information behind several clicks etc.

There are many opinions in this thread, thanks everyone! We released new widgets in response. Please try the new version (compact tiles and list view).

I’m going to close this idea, since we took a reasonable shot at addressing the most common ideas here. Happy to hear follow-up ideas.

  2. Remove movies that I've already seen from the homepage

Keep the current unseen New Releases and New DVDs on the homepage.

Good feedback, thanks. Especially good to know that you don’t like to see rated movies on the front page.

This change was made in version 4.0.4.

  3. Please keep the Wish List feature!

It's very helpful, especially for hard to find movies you perhaps can't see right away.

Thanks for the feedback! Please keep sending ideas about how to improve the wishlist feature. As it stands now, it’s basically the same as in the current MovieLens site.

  4. Show movie titles when hovering over a cover

Some of the movie covers don't display a title, or the text is too small to read easily. A tooltip showing the title and year when you hover over the cover would help.

There is now a hover effect on movie tiles. Thanks for the feedback!

  5. Make genres, actors, and directors clickable

When I see (e.g.) an actor's name on a movie's details page, it should be clickable to show a list of movies that actor has been in.

  6. Show recommendations from multiple sources

MovieLens supports multiple concurrent recommendation technologies, but currently only exposes one of them (an algorithm called item-item collaborative filtering that has been "tuned" for our community).

It would be fun to let users switch the default recommendation technology in their user profile.

Also, on movie details pages it would be interesting to see the predicted ratings of different algorithms.

  7. Movie tagging

There is no way to see or add tags in the new version of MovieLens.

We're planning to put these features back in as soon as we can.

  8. Better sign-up process

The current MovieLens sign-up process is too difficult to use. Users are required to rate 15 movies from a set list before they can use the system. However, the list is full of older and not extremely popular movies, and some users have great trouble (and some users leave).

Better would be to let new members into the system immediately, with some visual queue that rating more movies would help them to get better recommendations.
