Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Can there be multiple screenshots beside the title instead of one giant one?

Its easy to get the wrong impression about a movie if there is literally only one image to go by.

There are multiple images for the more popular movies. Click the arrows on the left and right to switch between them. Or, if you’re on a phone or tablet, swipe left and right.

This is good feedback, though, thanks. Possibly, we need to make the navigational icons more visually prominent.

  2. Make genres, actors, and directors clickable

When I see (e.g.) an actor's name on a movie's details page, it should be clickable to show a list of movies that actor has been in.

  4. Show recommendations from multiple sources

MovieLens supports multiple concurrent recommendation technologies, but currently only exposes one of them (an algorithm called item-item collaborative filtering that has been "tuned" for our community).

It would be fun to let users switch the default recommendation technology in their user profile.

Also, on movie details pages it would be interesting to see the predicted ratings of different algorithms.

  5. I found the two lists of 10 movies to compare impossible to rate as I had only heard of four movies on the lists and had seen none.

Perhaps the lists could be more commonly seen movies or could include short blubs so we can see if we were interested in them. The feedback I provided based on this list useless as I had so little knowledge of them.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry you missed it, the movies in the list were clickable, which opens up a window with movie plot summaries and trailers.

Some of the recommendation technologies that we are testing appear to skew towards “obscure” movie recommendations. That’s interesting to us, sorry the lists were hard for you to evaluate!

  6. Better sign-up process

The current MovieLens sign-up process is too difficult to use. Users are required to rate 15 movies from a set list before they can use the system. However, the list is full of older and not extremely popular movies, and some users have great trouble (and some users leave).

Better would be to let new members into the system immediately, with some visual queue that rating more movies would help them to get better recommendations.

  7. Does our interaction affect the same database as the old site?

Where should I rate new films? In the old site, the new one, both?

It’s your choice. Your ratings will be stored in the same place whether you use the new interface or the old one.

  8. Movie tagging

There is no way to see or add tags in the new version of MovieLens.

We're planning to put these features back in as soon as we can.
