Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Why don't the individual stars mean anything anymore?

I actually really liked that in the top right it explained that 5 stars meant "must see" and 1 star meant "awful". PLEASE DO NOT GET RID OF THIS.

A version of this feature has been released with the latest movielens update. This shows up as a small tool-tip if you hover over the rating interface.

Interested to hear what people think of this version of this feature.

  2. Keep the "about your ratings" feature

Do not remove "About your Ratings" section, please! It's so interesting to see those statistics... Also, at the moment the new version has very few genres...

  3. Bootstrap my ratings from IMDb

IMDb has an rss feed and a csv export for user's movie ratings.

It would be great to use this to populate my ratings here, as it's frustrating to do it in several places, and this should allow you to provide users with much better recommendations when joining.

  4. Allow me to create multiple lists of movies

Allow me to search and compare several films at the same time. When I am confronting the programme of a film festival full with unknown movies, I'd like to add all the titles in the same place and then see a list sorted by the predicted score. Thus, I would be able to choose which films to watch.

A version of this has been added to MovieLens. Find the "add to list" button either in the "..." menu on any of the "movie cards", or the "add to list" button on the movie detail page and then you can create a list or add movies to those lists. You can view all your lists from the menu available on the top-left of the page.

Lists can be private (available only to you) or public (available to you and other movielens users with the link)

  5. Options to hide posters / alternative layout

I personally have zero use for the posters. Completely unnecessary clutter. So at minimum an option to hide the posters would be nice. A more preferred approach would be an alternative layout similar to the current old layout. I want to see much information easily and dislike "dumbed down" mobile layouts which hide nearly all relevant information behind several clicks etc.

There are many opinions in this thread, thanks everyone! We released new widgets in response. Please try the new version (compact tiles and list view).

I’m going to close this idea, since we took a reasonable shot at addressing the most common ideas here. Happy to hear follow-up ideas.

  6. Please keep the Wish List feature!

It's very helpful, especially for hard to find movies you perhaps can't see right away.

Thanks for the feedback! Please keep sending ideas about how to improve the wishlist feature. As it stands now, it’s basically the same as in the current MovieLens site.

  7. "not interested" option; smaller posters; keep recommendation slider

Making a "not interested" option for movies you'll never watch to eliminate them from searches would be helpful. Smaller posters in the Beta with the titles underneath them and more per page (I personally like the posters there, but they seem too large). The thing I like most about the original is the recommendation slider on each movie page, so please keep that!

  8. Add date rated to movie ratings

After looking at my list of ratings I found I was able to sort by date rated but the date itself did not appear anywhere in the ratings information. Can you make the date rated visible please?

  9. Make genres, actors, and directors clickable

When I see (e.g.) an actor's name on a movie's details page, it should be clickable to show a list of movies that actor has been in.

  10. Can we keep a list and number of the movies we've seen?

This is the main reason I've stuck with MovieLens over other recommendation sites. I love having a reference guide of what I've seen that I can easily refer to.

  11. Hide wishlist movies

Make an option to hide all the movies that have been added to wishlist (same way it is with rated movies).
This way we can rate easily without having to scroll through all the movies we havent rated but added to wishlist.

    This is now in MovieLens,

On any "explore page" (by default the 2d grid of movies -- like a search, or if you click the "top picks" link etc. click the "show search tools" button around the top of the page (above the grid of movies) -- this pulls up the search tools, then go to the more tools and pick the wishlist status option.

  12. Show recommendations from multiple sources

MovieLens supports multiple concurrent recommendation technologies, but currently only exposes one of them (an algorithm called item-item collaborative filtering that has been "tuned" for our community).

It would be fun to let users switch the default recommendation technology in their user profile.

Also, on movie details pages it would be interesting to see the predicted ratings of different algorithms.

  13. Keep the movie tuner

MovieLens has a feature called the "movie tuner" that shows similar movies, and allows you to navigate based on tagging information. Keep it in the new version!

  15. Show movie titles when hovering over a cover

Some of the movie covers don't display a title, or the text is too small to read easily. A tooltip showing the title and year when you hover over the cover would help.

There is now a hover effect on movie tiles. Thanks for the feedback!

  16. Remove movies that I've already seen from the homepage

Keep the current unseen New Releases and New DVDs on the homepage.

Good feedback, thanks. Especially good to know that you don’t like to see rated movies on the front page.

This change was made in version 4.0.4.

  17. Better sign-up process

The current MovieLens sign-up process is too difficult to use. Users are required to rate 15 movies from a set list before they can use the system. However, the list is full of older and not extremely popular movies, and some users have great trouble (and some users leave).

Better would be to let new members into the system immediately, with some visual queue that rating more movies would help them to get better recommendations.

  18. Multiple genres in filter feature

When filtering results by things like release year and number of ratings, I'd like to filter by multiple genres. Currently MovieLens only supports a single genre at a time. E.g.,

    https://beta.movielens.org/explore?genre=science%20fiction&minPop=500&maxPop=1000&minYear=1980&sortBy=avgRating&page=3

searches for science fiction movies, but I'd like to also see action movies. Can you support "genre=science%20fiction&genre=action"?

The most recent update to movielens now has a multi-genre sesarching in the search tools. If you pick multiple genres you can limit to only movies with ALL of the genres, or get all movies with ANY of those movies.

  19. Adding new titles

This is a question/suggestion...before, it was up to the community to add new titles, will that still be applicable? How will this work?

Released in 4.0.5. We are still working on tools for editing movies.

  20. Hover over options such as add to wishlist

Instead of the little menu by the rating where you can choose to add a movie to your wishlist etc. it would be much nicer to have those options while hovering over the poster. (And, as another person suggested, have the title.)

Since the posters are so large, I think hover over options would look really nice with the overall look.

I’m going to mark this as completed, since we now have the “pin” wishlist widget on each movie tile.
