Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

How can we improve MovieLens? (if you have multiple suggestions, please submit them separately)

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. i like the old format.

    how can I access the whole list of movies that I rated that was on the old site.
    can I no longer access the old MOVIELENS site?

  2. Recommendation engine... faster way to tag a few films at the same time.

    Great site.

    Id like to see a really intricate recommendation engine could be achieved faster way to tag a few films at the same time.

  3. If I'm in a certain mood, it would be great to filter my suggestions by a certain genre

    It would be great to have this feature, maybe with a survey to get an idea of my current mood and suggest the right thing for the moment.

  4. Be able to block certain ratings

    I don't know if this is here already, but what if I want to block G and PG films or R and NC-17 films? It would be cool to add.

  5. Include more fun features

    For example a movie vs movie feature, or other things like allowing us to rank our favorite movies or create lists we can share.

  6. Adding serials

    Hello! Tell me, why are there no serials in your service? They are no less important when looking to watch than movies. I would very much like to have a series of recommendations also series. You have a very extensive database for searching with a variety of ratings. I would not want to look for another service, unless serials are added here. I think that most users will agree that the mentioned function is lacking. Survey if you are not sure of this opinion.

  7. clear all ratings/start anew

    I just wished to clear all my ratings because I wasn't consistent while rating but I couldn't find such feature, so could you add it please?

  8. Out On Blu-Ray/Digital

    Especially with so many titles being added that are 2019 and beyond, I would absolutely love to be able to limit my searches to "Out on Blue-Ray/Digital". I have to assume that this has been considered.

  9. Summary when hovering

    When rating movies / scrolling titles it would be convenient if a summary was provided when I hovered the cursor over a title/movie poster/box instead of just the rating, the stars, and genre. Similar to on netflix. As it is now if I cant remember if I've seen the movie (for rating purposed) or what its about (for selection purposes) I have to click the title and view a different page which either interrupts my task making it less efficient.

  10. add "give feedback" to the top menu

    I believe this option is not noticed by the majority of the users and it is very important if you want the user base to grow.

  11. Expand about your ratings

    In the "about your ratings" page, there should be a section where you can see the number of movie's you watched directed by/with actor/written by and so on. You could make it so that it shows the 5 most popular from your movie habits with the option to expand.
    When you click on the actor/director/screenwriter/.. you automatically search movies of said person.
    Also, a similar list for tags would be possible. E.g. Top 5 tags in the movies you watched.
    Both lists you could very well custumize to exclude certain movies, e.g. movies with less than 2 stars

  12. Make thumbnail images match movie image for a better browsing experience

    Some of the movie images are cut off by the limited size of the thumbnail image. This matters in terms of users who are browsing through the selection of movies. They might not recognize movies they want to rate because they can only see a limited portion of the movie poster.

  13. Let me select a language in my profile and then don't show me suggestions that are not in that language

    Let me put my preferred language in my profile. Then use that language to prescreen my recommendations.

  14. Promoting (giving more points for) copypasting tags from other sources for rare movies is a bad idea

    A rare movie was subjectively understood and tagged by some one guy on some Imdb and now Movielens users are supposed to multiply that subjective point up to 40 times?
    In my opinion it's against the principle of a good recommendation system, and especially if you want to get unique database of knowledge.

  15. Switch sinopsis spoilers for something more like RT's Critics Consensus

    I'm trusting more and more MovieLens predictions for new things to see. I've rated more than 1100 films and now I know that recommendations will be good (for me ; )

    But! whenever I click to see a movie that I might watch to check the credits, I get the "synopsis", which just ruins any surprise that the filmmakers might have been preparing.

    For example, "A celebrity is caught by her husband with a young lover. She ends the relationship, but slowly goes insane and kills herself."

    Can you switch, please, to a different sort of blurb?

  16. Widgets to embed last watched or last rated movies

    I'd like to have a series of widgets to embed in any blog or web site showing:
    - last watched movie
    - 5 recently watched movies
    - ... etc. also for rated...

  17. Add a Language Filter

    Set up a preference or option to allow the user to select the language that a movie is using. That way the recommender doesn't spend time presenting languages that the user doesn't speak.

  18. New ranking system and organization

    I would really like to rank my favorite movies from favorite to least favorites. or at least allow me to rank the movies i have given 4-5 stars.

    I also think that there should be a separate section for TV shows.

  19. Start Following Up with Movielens Feedback

    It would be great if this feedback site was still used, but it seems like the last post here was 3 years ago. Otherwise it would be cool for users to get to see what is in the works and what the new features are / historical features were. Perhaps share a timeline with us.

  20. Separate actor/director search

    Previously, the actor/director search seemed to be separate. Now, when I click on the director of a film, I'm also getting films in which they have an acting role. This is pretty much removing the utility of the function, and something on which I hope the course can be reversed.
