Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Add second line of title for long titles when viewing by tiles

Hey, on https://movielens.org/explore?q=lost%20ark it is not immediately obvious which is the actual movie (unless you've memorized the year of its release by heart).

Please consider having the title span two lines, or make the cards bigger so a longer title would fit (not sure how that would look on mobile, though)

    Thanks!

  3. Add an "I've not seen this movie" option to the rating process

Most of the films shown me for rating are films that I've not seen, or would not see, but I don't see how to rate them accordingly. Is there a feature that could incorporate that functionality?

  4. worth watching a few times, fun to watch

I've a question about how you guys take into consideration how many times a movie has been watched and if I movie has been watched for plain fun, to waste time on purpose.
What I mean is for example, I've watched BvS and Dark Knight multiple times because I like the that much, I've only watched a million dollar baby once, it was a great movie but I really don't want to watch it again. I would want recommendations that says worth watching once, you might like to watch multiple times.

The second thing was about fun to watch, I'm…

  5. Give me movies that I would actually watch

Most of the movies I rate, which clearly means I have been interested in enough to watch, are nothing like the ones that get recommended. I purposefully rate teen/movies for younger people and then I get recommended mostly action films that I have absolutely zero interest in. Page after page of action.

  6. Predicted score influence my decision making

I feel like sometimes my rating decision was influenced by the predicted stars: for example, I was going to rate "The Matrix" 5 star but movielens predicted the 4.5 star for me and I looked at it thinking: ye, fair enough. so I rated 4.5 instead.

My suggestion is that we can only see the predicted star after we rated a movie and movielens using phrase to indicate recommended movies star range such as "must see"(5-6 star), "decent" (4-5) etc..

  8. Search by movies WITHOUT tag

This would allow users to avoid certain tags: "short," "not a movie," "violence," "rape," etc.

  9. Compare Predictive Ratings with Friends

It would be awesome if there was a way to compare my ratings with a friends ratings and automatically generate a list of movies that we both would likely rate above a 4 for example. Would really help when trying to decide what movies to watch with friends.

  10. Add Actor's name in my rating history. (like most favorite actor)

so i can see which actor's movie i watched most. (As anyone rate movie, actor's name should automatically be added to my list (like tag : my tags))
show at least my top 10 or 20 or 50 actor's. or if possible then show all the actors. in rating history.

  11. Why does MovieLens no longer show if a movie is available on Netflix or Amazon Video?

I know this feature was definitely here last month, but now that I came back, it no longer shows me this. It was very helpful to filter out recommendations by what was currently viewable using my services.

  13. need to sort by the projected estimate

films are presented on some internal weighted order (for example, in a large contribution of novelty), but I want to see what films are with estimated high rating for me. I have films on the first page with a predicted rating of 2-3 stars, whereas sometimes when I looked at some film that I liked and came to evaluate it, I see that it was predicted for me by 4 stars. And I want to see what other films the recomender expects will receive high rating from me.

  17. Better UI and scrolling with finger

The UI could be optimized to be more user friendly. Such as the menu button or the list of movies, it has two and a half veiw able movies at any given time. Also, being able to scroll thriugh the movies on mobile would be nice. Currently you can olny use the arrow buttons.

  18. Make an identical version of movielens for books

I noticed someone (maybe you) has made a similar project called Booklens, but it is only linked to a very small number of US libraries. Since other book recommendation services are not that good, why don't making a recommendation system for books that works exactly like MovieLens, where people can add books to the site, rate and tag them?

  19. Year of release for each movie in homepage

I liked it when I could see the year of release of my recommendations (or of the movies I've rated) without having to click on them. Sometimes I feel like watching a more/less recent movie, or I'm just curious to know when it was released, or there can be movies with the same title but released in different years.

  20. Be more like Jinni

    I miss Jinni.

It's been years and I'm still grieving.

    I miss:

    • browsing a list of films in which some films are well-known and other unknown, and being able to chose the proportion in which those two are mixed

    • ratings creating preference poles using 3 descriptive adjectives, such as "misfit non-linear anti-hero", or "feel-good romance non-linear", etc. All the time Jinni was alive, I have loved being able to chose a film by the mood I wanted to be in, from a list of films that were cherry-picked for me.

    • being able to filter each list by year (I cannot…
