An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback!
We are going to add tags back into the system, and we're keeping the old ability to say "I like/dislike this tag about this movie".
We are planning to add additional filtering by various movie metadata.
There is another thread on localization, please add your votes there if you want to prioritize that feature. http://movielens.uservoice.com/forums/238501-general/suggestions/5542020-titles-according-to-user-language-localization

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedInteresting feedback! The new system's algorithm is only slightly tweaked. It is always interesting to hear about how these changes impact experiences.
We plan to add a language filter.

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedWe would like this feature, maybe via canistreamit
In particular, we'd like to be able to filter search results by streaming/online availability. Not sure how to do that yet.

Thanks – great idea!
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedWe are moving more toward that Netflix model, where the front page is a bunch of lists of recommendations that aim to serve as "jumping off points" to start a new exploration.
I like the extensive genre hierarchy that Netflix uses in their lists. We don't have that, but we have a great tagging collection.
In any case, the current front page is really just a placeholder until we can put some work into a more compelling set of recommendations.

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedGood feedback.
If we were to support a "browse by mood" feature, we probably would leave it to you whether you want to set your current mood or your target mood :) All we know about in our data is movie tags, so we'd like to expose a search interface where we can prioritize the display of uplifting or dark movies, depending on how your preference.

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback. I've heard this from a few folks, and so it is important for us to address this issue.
However, I am confused - are you talking about the movie details page or the search results page? (or both)

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback. This seems to be a common request. Too much bandwidth required, currently.

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback! The new "list" feature sort of provides this, but perhaps you're looking for more of a rich list feature. I agree this would be great.

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback. I'd personally like to move to a larger set of genres, too. Probably, the list of genres should be "controlled" by the community (e.g., you could add "psychological", and others could vote for its inclusion as a "genre").
Otherwise, we have tags (coming soon to the preview site) which overlaps with genres to some degree.

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback. We have enabled some hover effects, but nowhere near as detailed as you are asking for. Let's see how much traction this issue gets - we could possibly implement a more substantial hover box (like Netflix).

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commented@anonymous - thanks for that link. We're not currently planning on adding infinite scrolling.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback. We are in the process of developing a "rate more movies" interface, and developing a feature like this is certainly possible.

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedNice suggestions. We are planning on an "export my ratings" feature. It's interesting to hear your additional ideas for things to export, thanks!

An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThanks for the feedback! We are definitely considering adding points or badges. We have not yet thought about t-shirts or other physical incentives, though we probably would if we were more marketing-minded :)
We will never display ads, etc., don't worry.

Thanks for the feedback. Other users like this feature because viewing movies in the movielens interface offers different information (e.g., predicted ratings). Let’s see if others chime in.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commented@Emma - thanks, that is a good idea.

Thanks for the suggestion – this would be nice to fix.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commented@Brian two possible solutions:
* configurable number of results per page in your user settings
* some text indication like "showing movies 25-48 of 2,489"Thoughts?

I’m interested in hearing ideas from movielens users on how we might operationalize these features.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThe current interface has a very simple version of this: using item rating correlations, show the 10 most similar movies, ranked by correlation score.
So, separating out the computation piece and the visualization piece:
* There are lots of ways of computing "generic" similarity scores. We have two that we've used in the past that often work - rating correlations and tag similarity. I thought you were getting at "specific" similarity measures, where we look at particular dimensions of a movie to find different sorts of relationships, which is an idea I like.
* The easiest way to visualize similar movies is, starting from an anchor movie (e.g., on a movie page), show a list of related movies. I am open to a more complicated navigation interface (e.g., a scatterplot with controls) if I can understand the types of browsing and exploration that it will enable. That is not clear to me yet, though I'm happy to brainstorm.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedThinking more about how we could get this feature. As a user, I can offer to say which movies are similar to the movie I'm currently looking at. The system could prompt me for movies that are similar in particular ways (setting, remakes, and series come to mind), and display these relationships separately in the interface. Interesting possibilities here.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedOur tagging interface is flexible enough to support some of these ways of organizing movies (e.g., setting), but we do not have any current mechanism for organizing users into "tagging campaigns" that would lead to concerted tagging effort. And, without concerted effort, maybe 1% of the database gets tags related to setting.
Do you have other ideas for how to collect this data about movies?

We are planning to add the capability of filtering by language, which I think gets you what you’re looking for.
I suppose the other option would be to have a filter to “hide a genre” – e.g., all genres except x. We’re not planning that one, but happy to hear feedback.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedFair enough, Juan. However, we do not have "country" in our database, while we do have languages.

We’ve taken the easy first step by adding links to IMDB and TMDB.
The harder second step is coming: add arbitrary links (e.g., amazon). We will probably need our members to add/maintain those links, so that will require more development.
Happy to hear suggestions for more sites to link to.
An error occurred while saving the comment Max Harper commentedAmazon and Hulu would be fantastic. We're currently thinking through exactly how we collect links for sites like those (and more, as they pop up). Possibly though user-contributions, but maybe there are easier solutions.
Thanks for the feedback. I completely agree with your comments, and "foreign to whom" made me laugh. The answer is "foreign to people from the US", but about 50% of our users are not from the US :)
The list is currently straight from TMDB.
I am very interested in shifting to a more tag-like genre model, so that we can collect more nuanced genre information (e.g., if we only have the screen real estate to show one genre, which one should it be?). Also, different users have different ideas about what are the interesting genres.
I like your idea of making the list configurable (or, marking genres as favorites).
