    I think you don't need to have a different app for a broader audience, you just need public profiles, public access to movie pages (and the similar movies section) and some share features (facebook, twitter, tumblr?)

    I agree, this would be a great idea. I'm mostly happy with the wizard recommendations, but I often feel like I wan't less "obvious" recommendations. Every time The Godfather or Schindler's List turn up in my recommendations I have to groan a little. Yes, I know I'd probably like them but I knew they were highly regarded movies anyway. I didn't get any new insights from that recommendation.

    What I often want from movielens are the insiders' tips. The first dozen movies in the "your rating vs average" list is a way better reflection of my personal taste in movies than just a look at the films I rated highly. So sorting by predicted vs average will probably give me some films that I'd love despite them being not as positively reviewed and discussed by others.
