Smaller/no images for mobile users
I use movielens on my Nexus 4 phone. The reliance on the huge movie poster idiom makes the site mostly unusable on my phone. It is an extremely inefficient use of space. I have to scroll like crazy to digest even a small but of information. I would much prefer compact grid for results like the old site.

Customize row categories
In the home page, let the user choose the row categories/filters. Right now you show "Top Picks" "Higest rated recent releases" and "Most rated recent releases".
I would like, at least, to have more kind of rows availabe (I guess there will be since this is only a preview) and to be able to choose (or hide/show) the ones that interest me. More advanced option/ or in the future, also to set(& name) my own search filters to define rows.1 voteThanks – great idea!

Keep the sliders (similar movies)
I found the sliders really helpful to find new movies based on what I had seen.

Recollecting memory, improve film recognition
Often I do not intentionally watch a movie. I just come across on telly (HBO, Film1, or just any other) I look how far in it is and if acceptable (20-30 mins) continue watching.
The current overview of thumbnails is alright but what do i do here? What is the task in my mind? Rating movies! And for rating movies, I think:
- the amount of movies is good, but
- the thumbnails are too small
- would be nice to see move thumbnails of the same move when hovering over
- would be nice to have "infinity" page instead…1 voteThanks for the feedback!

Nice to know more about the workings of the system.
How are film descriptive words generated, derived and matched?
What are the film variables?
How are variables used to form groups? Are film and/or book preference significantly correlated to preferences or aptitudes in other areas -- sports, hobbies, types of social activities, learning strategies, diversity of interests, etc.

Provide overview of lens system
Give thorough basics of how and why the system works. This may lead to more insightful user feedback, plus, in a certain sector, generate more user interest and involvement.

Ask for system re-application ideas
Ask users in what other areas a recommendation system like this could be applied where it currently may not be. Beyond the noise, maybe a user will come up with an idea that's insightful, cool and compelling.

left-right scroll needs more stuff
The left-right scrolling is a cool idea, but the behavior is odd when the contents are just slightly wider than the width of the window. Being able to wiggle each row just a little doesn't seem to add much value. Having more stuff in each row, or chopping off one element, might be better.
1 voteThanks for the ideas. Yes, that scrolling is a little wonky, especially for folks who are using a mouse. We’re planning to address this at some point.

Make link to IMDB re-use browser tab
I think that the old site behaved as follows: if you had already used a link to IMDB from ML, and did not close the resulting browser tab, clicking on a subsequent IMDB link from ML would re-use that tab. New UI creates a new browser tab for every IMDB link clicked. Maybe this is an IMDB issue, maybe a browser issue, maybe ML issue.

Cleaner movie grid - just show movies and titles (was: Less is more)
It's a bit too busy, distracting and hard on the eyes. On the start page, where it lists all the movies as little rectangles, I'd recommend removing the ratings, minutes, year for each movie. Just have the movie name and poster. It would result in a much cleaner look. People can always see that info by clicking on the movie.

Show movie details when hovering
Show movie details (synopsis, actor, director etc) when hovering over a movie. Also links to imdb and rotten tomatoes etc.

Put actor names and director name on the flip of the movie poster.
Then, like in a previous suggestion, once the poster is 'clicked' to see the full summary have the names 'click-able.' I believe these would be invaluable in finding movies that are close to the one that is being 'perused.'

Show films I added
I'd like a way to find which films I added to the database. Thus I could find what the rest of the users would think about those films.

Change criteria for a 'rare' movie
The criteria for a rare film on Movielens have some very weird results sometimes. For example, my list for the rarest movies I have rated lists films like 'Drinking Buddies' or 'Romantics Anonymous' alongside 'Now You See Me' or 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.
Now, I doubt that anyone would consider movies that make more than 300 Mio. as rare. I assume this is due to a certain selection bias, because movielens users are naturally more interested in rare movies than the general population.
I think this problem could be fixed very easily if you use the number of imdb…1 vote -
Make the UI mouse friendly and keyboard friendly
Right now, in the main page, you cannot scroll horizontally with the mouse.
Before releasing a new version you should check that the UI can be operated by keyboard only and by mouse only.1 vote -

Next page button
It would be nice to have next page buttons at top and bottom of the page, and for the page to refresh so that you are at the top instead of needing to scroll to the top manually.
