Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

On a film's page the right side details director, cast and release date but I would love to also see the writer.

Include more women on your team - lessen the male bias. Don't use stereotypical terms like "chick flicks" to trivialize types of movies
"Chick flicks" as a category? Inherent negative bias makes it appear that the movies are automatically shallow. I find the terminology patronizing.
2 votesI understand and fundamentally agree with your concern. However, tags are contributed by the community, not our team. We currently do not have any mechanism or policy for censoring tags. Suggestions?
FYI, you can flag tags as “bad”, which will make them less likely to show up to subsequent users.

More direct tag exposure
Let user see tag cluster associated with their tuner, recommender.
Have interface to let user define and save tag clusters for searching.

Personal ratings renormalization
My ratings are now extremely tightly distributed (I think; there's no way to see a histogram(?)) ... and they naturally get tighter over time, because I know if I change my rating scale I'll throw everything out of whack.
I'd love to (1) have a button to redistribute all my previous ratings onto a more uniform distribution, and (2) have a reference point for what these ratings mean for me, like a percentile or an example of a movie I've previously rated at that level (and maybe even one a half-star above and below!).
1 voteInteresting ideas!
Renormalizing is hard, since we would have to guess (e.g.) which of your 3 star ratings are really the “better” 3 star ratings that should be moved up.
Potentially we could explore a semi-automated interface (we make a guess, you get to fine-tune it) for renormalizing ratings.
The reference point ideas are interesting, but obviously present design challenges. We’ve done a bit of research work in this space, possibly we could promote these types of interfaces to movielens.

A histogram of your ratings is coming in the next release.

Put actor names and director name on the flip of the movie poster.
Then, like in a previous suggestion, once the poster is 'clicked' to see the full summary have the names 'click-able.' I believe these would be invaluable in finding movies that are close to the one that is being 'perused.'

Show movie details when hovering
Show movie details (synopsis, actor, director etc) when hovering over a movie. Also links to imdb and rotten tomatoes etc.

Graphics lite mode for 2G connections.
Lo/zero graphics site similar to old movielens for slow connections.

Smaller/no images for mobile users
I use movielens on my Nexus 4 phone. The reliance on the huge movie poster idiom makes the site mostly unusable on my phone. It is an extremely inefficient use of space. I have to scroll like crazy to digest even a small but of information. I would much prefer compact grid for results like the old site.

ratings analysis : chart to see which are your "favorite" years.
After having seen the "release years of your rated movies" chart,
I was thinking about how would look a chart that analyze which are our "favorite" movie years, based on the movie ratings.
For a fan of sci-fi / horror, for example, it would be the 80's.
For a fan of superheroes, there would be a peak those years, etc.How cool would that be ?

Customize row categories
In the home page, let the user choose the row categories/filters. Right now you show "Top Picks" "Higest rated recent releases" and "Most rated recent releases".
I would like, at least, to have more kind of rows availabe (I guess there will be since this is only a preview) and to be able to choose (or hide/show) the ones that interest me. More advanced option/ or in the future, also to set(& name) my own search filters to define rows.1 voteThanks – great idea!

Ask for system re-application ideas
Ask users in what other areas a recommendation system like this could be applied where it currently may not be. Beyond the noise, maybe a user will come up with an idea that's insightful, cool and compelling.

left-right scroll needs more stuff
The left-right scrolling is a cool idea, but the behavior is odd when the contents are just slightly wider than the width of the window. Being able to wiggle each row just a little doesn't seem to add much value. Having more stuff in each row, or chopping off one element, might be better.
1 voteThanks for the ideas. Yes, that scrolling is a little wonky, especially for folks who are using a mouse. We’re planning to address this at some point.

change colours
I find the pale-ish blue against the white combined with the spacing between rows (with the ratings in blue) for the titles too hard to read.

Cleaner movie grid - just show movies and titles (was: Less is more)
It's a bit too busy, distracting and hard on the eyes. On the start page, where it lists all the movies as little rectangles, I'd recommend removing the ratings, minutes, year for each movie. Just have the movie name and poster. It would result in a much cleaner look. People can always see that info by clicking on the movie.

Change criteria for a 'rare' movie
The criteria for a rare film on Movielens have some very weird results sometimes. For example, my list for the rarest movies I have rated lists films like 'Drinking Buddies' or 'Romantics Anonymous' alongside 'Now You See Me' or 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.
Now, I doubt that anyone would consider movies that make more than 300 Mio. as rare. I assume this is due to a certain selection bias, because movielens users are naturally more interested in rare movies than the general population.
I think this problem could be fixed very easily if you use the number of imdb…1 vote -
Make the UI mouse friendly and keyboard friendly
Right now, in the main page, you cannot scroll horizontally with the mouse.
Before releasing a new version you should check that the UI can be operated by keyboard only and by mouse only.1 vote -
Offer a basic rating query for a specific movie
A query service for a specific movie would allow to show the predicted/rated rating of a movie on Netflix, alongside with IMDB,and rotten tomatoes (which can be queried for their ratings)

Similar Movies, more search tools
When viewing similar movies provide more search tools, as seen elsewhere on the site. Specifically, the tool I would use the most is an option to show only unrated movies.
