General

Hi MovieLens users! We recently launched our first major revision to MovieLens since 2003! Please help us grow in the right direction by giving us thoughtful feedback on the design and functioning of the new user experience.

Ideas, questions, and bug reports are all welcome here.

  1. Allow users to pick favorite genres (was: The selection of obvious genres is questionable)

When I press the "Explore" button I found a list of genres half of which are irrelevent for me. Either make the list of obvious genres dynamically chosen for my account, or let me configure it, or give me more of them in the menu, or whatever.

    It gives me

    animation
    comedy
    documentary
foreign (this is no a genre dammit!) Foreign to whom????

    I'd rather see

    adventure
    file noir
    eastern
    western

so most of the times I will have to click twice.

  2. refine search with boolean filters

Could you add a feature to refine search with operators ?
I mean, it is actually possible to search by multiple tags, for example :

    "eighties, superheroes, drama"

it would be awesome to be able to be more accurate with boolean operations, eg.

    "eighties +horror +teen"

    "superheroes +vilains -batman"

  3. Remove Recent Releases From Main Page, They Can Be Found Anywhere!

It isn't difficult to find recently released movies that are popular. EVERY other recommendation site does this, you can find those movies on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes. I don't use movielens to see whats currently playing in theaters! I mean come on you can just google that stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. Other users like this feature because viewing movies in the movielens interface offers different information (e.g., predicted ratings). Let’s see if others chime in.

  4. Incentivize tagging, edits, user loyalty

People love a t-shirt, a button for their backpack, or even a gold star next to their user name. If you're looking to increase user participation in tag maintenance, merch and/or some sort of premium account are the answer. 1000 tags, enjoy your new coffee mug. 5,000 tags, have some embroidered socks.1,000,000 tags, welcome to movielens gold where the movies rate you.

If this means we will be seeing ads on the site to support an overwhelming obligation to supply a huge influx of chronic taggers with cheap crap, then forget I suggested it.

  5. Movie Details & Options When Hovering Over Cover

It'd be great if when I hovered over a movie cover I could see a brief synopsis of the film w/additional options (i.e., Add to Wishlist, etc.), instead of having to click on the movie.

  6. Plot summary

I would like to have a plot summary when the cursor is hovering over a title.

  7. sort suggestions based on predicted ratings

Maybe this is already possible, but I don't see it. I just want to see the movies that movielens predicts I'll rate the highest. right now movie lens only suggests movies that I would rate between 4-4.5 stars. When I go to the top picks and sort by recommended. then it only shows me 4.1 star movies.

Meanwhile my friend tells me I need to watch the Shawshank redemption, I search it on MovieLens and get a predicted score of 4.9! I'm scratching my head wondering, why am I getting a recommendation for some weird looking movie called Jojo Rabbit…

  8. I liked being able to control how many movies I saw per page

I really can control the amount of information I'm getting in the old version. The pictures are nice but I like Movie lens for the control and the information! Improved graphics are nice but they're secondary to me.

  9. Yet more genres would be great.

I love the increased amount of genres, but could we have even more? Maybe "Psychological" "Superhero" "Fairy Tale" and "Monster" for starters?

  11. Ajax based refresh button and automatic refresh

I'm new to Movielens and I find it annoying to reload the whole page once I've rated already-watched movies in the recommendations, (which actually are more than 50-60% of the recommendations). It'd be great to have an ajax based refresh button to reload new recommendations. Moreover, an automatic refresh system would be great, once the system detects a certain number of rating to recommended movies.

  12. Clean ratings

It's hard to think about unbiased rating when I'm looking at the predictions and statistics. It would be nice to have a UX flow where that information is not visible before I enter a rating.

Good feedback. We would like to provide an unbiased interface for rating movies.

  13. Display list of movies for rating statistic

In the About your ratings, it shows graphs of movies based on year, rareness, etc. But it only gives the number, whereas I don't know which of my movies qualifies as "rare" or "common" and I'm also curious to see why I have a spike in movies from 1985-1990

You've got "directors" and "cast", much like the old Movielens, how about listing the writers too?

  15. Integration of tags and wish list

An alternative to the idea of allowing users to create their own lists.

I know you can create your own tags and view all of the tags you've created, but I feel like it makes more sense to combine this feature with your Wishlist. My vision is that there would be some sort of side bar including your Wishlist, followed by all of your tags (and perhaps the option to sort these tags in an order of your choosing).

That way you could have tags such as "Wishlist--Classics", "Wishlist--Top rated", "Wishlist--Foreign films", "Recommendations from Emi", "Favorite films", "Films for long…

  16. Suggestions filter by where you can watch.

It would be great to see the most recommend movies that are available on the platforms I subscribe to. I have ran into the issue that there is a movie you recommend and I want to watch it but I have to use another service to see if it is streaming anywhere. Wasted time for a lot of people who won't buy or rent old movies since we already pay monthly subscriptions.

I think we would love to have this feature, but we've had some consistent issues with finding a good and free source of this information.

If anyone knows a good source of this information, do let us know and we can look into adding this feature in some way.

  17. Expand the statistics Movielens provides

Can Movielens, based on my ratings, provide an estimate of my preference for the work of particular directors, screenwriters, and actors?

Also, it would be great to see an estimate of my preference for different combinations (e.g., directors x screen writers, or directors x actors).

  18. Option to get Top picks based on TARGET mood

Since there was a question in the survey about moods, I expect it to be a parameter in the picking of movies.
Let me explain TARGET mood: The mood I want to be, not the mood I am now. For example "happy" as target mood is more accurate for picking movies than "depressed" as current mood. Because a "depressed" user might want different picks, one might want to cheer up, other might want to sulk in self-pity.

  19. Include more women on your team - lessen the male bias. Don't use stereotypical terms like "chick flicks" to trivialize types of movies

"Chick flicks" as a category? Inherent negative bias makes it appear that the movies are automatically shallow. I find the terminology patronizing.

I understand and fundamentally agree with your concern. However, tags are contributed by the community, not our team. We currently do not have any mechanism or policy for censoring tags. Suggestions?

FYI, you can flag tags as “bad”, which will make them less likely to show up to subsequent users.

  20. Movies grid

I see that you are using a fluid interface, but in my screen I am seeing 24 films in a grid of 5x5, leaving thus an empty position at the end.
I don't know what you can do and I see that 24 is a very divisible number, but there is this error case.
